Ripe on bottom - not on top

Newbie here, we have our first real garden this year and planted a dozen plants with heirloom Cleota Pink and German Johnson. The Cleota Pink are HUGE and they are ripening great from bottom almost to the top. The top stays green. We pulled them and brought them inside but they aren't ripening on the top and now getting rotton on the bottom. Anybody ever have this happen?

I am not familiar with cleota pink, but German Johnson will remain green on top like many heirloom pinks and blacks.
