Small tomatoes -- What's up?

For two years now my tomatoes have been coming in very small compared to years past. The only thing I'm doing differently is watering them at their base with a wand once a week rather than have the sprinklers spray them every third day. There are plenty of amendments in the soil and I fertilize every few weeks. It gets around 90 degrees in my garden each day and we get lots of sun. Might I not be giving them enough water? Any ideas?

any diffrence in sunlight or shadows cast by trees
deep watering is far superior than frequent overhead watering

They are planted in the same area each year, but I add a whole lot of amendments prior to planting in April. I may not be giving them enough water each week. They get plenty of sun from morning until evening. It gets quite hot in the garden area -- around 85 to 90 degrees on most days.

I read that we should snip out the suckers in order to get larger tomatoes. The article says if we leave the suckers we get more but smaller tomatoes.
