The Beginning of Tomato Season in Miami

The heat of summer is beginning to break in Miami. I should have begun 2 weeks ago, but I have little energy these days. I need to prep the containers and start seeds now. Varieties? All I know is that it will include Everglades. Beyond that, I don't yet know.

The second variety will be Bloody Butcher. Beyond that, who knows.

The head count so far is 55 babies. Only traces of disease and insects. Mid winter should deal with that.

Seed starting for bloody butcher was a total failure.

I have grown bloody butcher in Hawaii so it is possible. Try around the end of February.

What a bummer. Did they germinate at all or did they die-off as seedlings? Can you get started plants of another variety for where you intended to grow them? (Yeah I know, that's so disappointing when you wanted to grow a particular variety from seeds. But sometimes you just have to move on.)

Bloody Butcher is I think cool weather tolerant and early maturing. Shorter plants, around saladette size I think. It was productive and did well in my shadier bed, so it might not tolerate heat very well.

I imagine by end of February, it's already going to start getting hot in Miami and garf needs the tomatoes to be producing and ready to harvest?

No sooner than I posted this, I have 5 sprouts. 5 for 5 at 24 days.

I've said before -- posting on the forum about an underperforming garden or plants often makes them grow better. It's like they don't want you telling the world how bad they are....

I have the first ripe Everglades tomato of 2016. My taste tester has already eaten it and pronounced it GREAT.

The cat food fed plant is going crazy. I already know this is a duplicate post.
