Supermarket Tomatoes 4

On 1-27-15 I started Batch 4 of Supermarket Tomatoes. I planted 4 seeds and I have 2 up today, 6 days later. Pics later.

So are you finding these to be superior to the varieties you've grown in the past?

Have you noted any difference among the three?

Batch 1 had the only plant that survived a Miami summer for me ever. Batch 2 has plants that are growing better than any I have had, but I think it's because I found out what I have been doing wrong before. Batches 3 & 4 are to be seen.

Batch 1 was more vine like. Batch 2 look like small trees and are very low with huge stems. Batch 3 are very small. Batch 4 just sprouted. I think the Tomato Tone made a big difference.

All 4 from batch 4 are up. The one in the lower left came up as a helmet head and I damaged it removing it. Time will tell if it makes it.

I try. Looks like the 4 sprouts will make it including the one I damaged. Now to go out and find more large pots plus more ProMix BX.

Check your local nursery for pots. I get mine for as cheap as 0.15 for the small ones like you have in the picture. Been meaning to ask, ever consider using flats? Uses less soil for starters and you get more plants.

I use community pots, they actually hold a lot of seedlings and take up less space than flats.

Like this? I don't like this because I always loose too many seedlings.

I have taken to starting seeds in batches of 4 to 8 seeds in small pots. This way it spreads out ripening so that I don't have all ripen at once. Using seed freshly removed from the tomato, I usually get 100% germination.

So are you taking seed from a tomato from each new generation of grow out, or from a newly purchased supermarket tomato?

So far, I have been selecting a fresh tomato from the supermarket each time. Next season, the good ones grown this time will yield seed for next seasons crop.

Is each new generation of supermarket tomato a new variety or the same variety?

Supermarket tomatoes 1, 2, 3, 4, are from different tomatoes off the shelf from Publix. I could have duplicated them, I don't know.

Oh! I looked at all the threads.

I meant future generations from the growouts that you've already harvested. The children from gen 1-4.

What I have are not generations. I refer them as batches to denote the same season. So far, I am only committed to saving seed from batch 1, because I have not yet tasted batches 2 on. Time will tell. I need to refine my seed saving skill a little more.

One of batch 4 has been destroyed. The other 3 are fine except for leaf miner.

I am a little confused. Are these plants from seed packets purchased at a supermarket or are they seeds harvested from store bought tomatoes?.

Supermarket Tomatoes 1, 2, 3, and 4, were from seeds taken from 4 different supermarket tomatoes, not seed packets from supermarkets. I have seeds saved from my batch 1 tomatoes from my garden.
