When to move Tomatoes outside?

Mon Apr 29, 2013 9:24 pm

I have up-potted all of my tomatoes about a week ago and was wondering when I can start hardening them off outside? I would also like to know when I can transplant them permanently outside? I am in Northern NJ.
This is what they look like at this point

Google should tell you when your last frost dates are....I'd guess within the next couple weeks...

Last frost date is April 15th around here. How soon after that can I put these in the ground? I was thinking about starting to harden them off around Thursday of this week.

Then you should be good to go. I'd check the 10 day forecast. If nothing lower than say 40 or so, I wouldn't hesitate. Start hardening them....if everything still looks good in another week or so, stick them in the ground....

You can harden them off any time the day time temperatures are above 60 degrees or so. Put the plants in the ground after the last frost date for your area and the lows are generally in the mid to upper forties.
Eclectic gardening style, drawing from 45 years of interest and experience. Mostly plant in raised beds and containers primarily using intensive gardening techniques.
