One of my tomato plants has a lot of hairs all over the stem and leaves. But on some places the 'hairs' have accumulated to form a fibrous white stuff.
I honestly can't tell if this is a fungus or not. I will spray but in the mean time I'd like to know.
Any ideas?

Hi I have included some diagnostic links see if any of these pictures or descriptions help. Look closely with a magnifying glass on the undersides and stem of the plant. Curling leaves is usually a sucking pest. Whitefly, mealy bugs, spider mites, aphids leave residues that you will notice before you even see the bug.
Google search tomato mealy bugs

I'd love to post a picture if my iPhone/Mac would just play along!
Ok I wasn't clear - the plant is healthy, does not have powdery mildew and the hairs are 100% not insects at all. There is a little curling of a few leaves though.
But, this
Thanks imafan26

But, this
is the closest. I suppose it really could be a hairy tomato but the only problem with that is that this is the only plant. This is one of 5 seedlings that grew on their own so they are surprise tomatoes. But seeing as we only get round red tomatoes and rosa tomatoes from the shops I don't know how.imafan26 wrote: Blue woolly mammoth tomato

Yeah not quite as woolly maybe but similar with extra hairs. If this was a volunteer, I guess seed with the longer pubescent hair gene in it was introduced into the garden at some point. I think there are several different varieties around.
It would be interesting to see how it performs and tastes. You could save seeds from this one's fruits and see if the trait will continue to showup. If you learn to breed tomatoes, you could try crossing this one with another one.
It would be great if you could kep us updated.
