when to top tomato plants

hello group
I have a couple of plants which are doing quite well. A friend suggested that I top the plants at a certain stage of development. One is in a half barrel, the other's in the ground. Both are about 3.5-4 feet high. I've been pretty aggressive with taking off the suckers. What about actually not letting the plant get to high? Any ideas.
Thanks!

Hi there, you should cut it just above the last group of fruit in the fall, thia way the plant will put its energy into those last fruit instead of growing more....if it was to continue to grow, it would only be killed by frost. Tomatoes are fun, enjoy your plants!
