Let's not forget to mention that smooth leaves (potato leaves) also shade the plant more.

Since it came up the only plant doing really well other than the teeny tiny ones that don't need much is Big Cheef a full size potato leaf that made it's way into the lair.

I favored my selections in the garden for the PL trait. The dwarfs just didn't have it this time around.
