Lots of Maters

I am tyring several varieties of tomatoes this year and I have tried to space the starts so as to spread out the planting times. I now have maters, maters and more maters in various stages.

From just spouted:

to five inch peat pots:

to ready to plant as soon as I dare:

to a few that I have already put in the ground or pots. The full ones I had in the greenhouse over the winter:

Still feels a little too chilly for the blossoms to set fruit, but this weather is tempting.

I'm so jealous! Mine are still itty bitty. Will tomatoes cross pollinate? I have a few different varieties that I want to plant. Should I but a good bit of distance between them?

Awesome lankngulf, looking good. Heres to great season.

Penpal if you are wanting to save seed, which is the only reason to worry about x-pollination. you can bag you flowers with something to keep them pure. If they cross it won't effect your tomatos this season.

Meant to say Lakngulf that those lights are too far away from your plants. They should be close, like 4-8 inches away or so. If you rasied the lights for the pic ignore this.

Good luck friend. I seem to remember you having problems last year.

Heres to a great year. :flower:

The weather has just been so nice that I put out some more tomatoes. These are in soil where tomatoes bit the dust last year. This year I have two varieties that are supposed to resist southern bacterial wilt. In this box I have four Neptune, four Florida 7514, one Better Boy and one Beef Steak. Last year, Better Boys and Celebrities died in this box.

In case the tomatoes fail, the left side of the box has Silver Queen corn. That will be interesting, especially if the tomatoes make it.

I have so many tomatoes that I decided to try some at my farmland/hunting property. I have been growing some sawtooth oaks, planted some of them, and plan to water them along the way. Since I will be there I can water the tomatoes as well. Was not sure where I was going to plant them, but this looked like a good spot. Maybe inside the hay rack the critters will let some of them live.

Yes, they are really out in the middle of a pasture.

I wonder if we'll be able to see the hay rack come the end of the summer. 8)

Great idea pittuing them in the pasture. I wish I had some land somewhere else to put a bunch more in. I had to NOT plant a bunch due to lack of room in my garden.

The more I look at the pictures, more I like that haystack as a garden bed surround idea. 8) Can you duck through one of the openings to get inside?

I am learning how to negotiate that. I actually climb over, BUT, the rack sits on three legs, and I have to be sure to climb at one of them.

Over the winter I had four or five tomato plants in my greenhouse. When the weather warmed I moved two of them outside and left the others in the greenhouse. I had about decided against growing them in the greenhouse next year because they bloomed but would not put on fruit.

Well, I have changed my mind. The two moved outside and the plants still in the greenhouse are now loaded with little tomatoes
