Crop pictures, Purple Russian Tomatoes..

Just thought I'd post a few pics of my first toms of the season. Started seeds in late sep, now getting some fruit. First one was a little mushy, had it in brown bag for a week to fully ripen, may have been over ripe? I's wondering if a gallon of water a day is to much? Grown in 7 gallon containers.

Looking good down south! Just started my extra-early maters at 10:00am this morning! Let the count down begin!

I also ordered Purple Russian ammong others for this season too.

Never realized until I cut it, what a uniform pentagon shape the Purp russians have, wonder why? I assume lots of tomatoes do also?

Oh man... you southerners drive us crazy. I've got snow, below zero temps and a month away from even being able to plant tomato seeds, much less have ripe tomatoes!

Yes, Florida is good for Nov thru April. After that, forget any chance of Tomatoes, In my experience.

Looks great! The tomatoes and those lovely bamboo tomato cages! Much better looking than my ugly metal poles. I used those plastic wire ties that you use also.

Next year bamboo for me! :D

The fruit shape maybe normal or....
Misshapen Fruit

Common abnormalities are pointed fruits with an elongated blossom end, puffy fruit in which air spaces have developed, or lack of round smoothness that may be similar to catfacing. The cause is usually due to low air temperature [less than 55°F (12.7°C)] and cloudy weather that interferes with the growth of the pollen tubes and normal fertilization of the ovary.

Puffiness

Puffiness most frequently occurs in early-harvested fruit caused by a variety conditions. such as high [>90°F (32.2°C)] and low [<58°F (14.4°C)] air temperatures, low light, excessive nitrogen (N) fertilization, or heavy rainfall, in which one or more seed cavities are empty

HL, So how do they taste?

Got to admitt its tough on the soul to see that kinda stuff with 2' of snow and below zero temps. Yesterday or the day before it was like -36 degrees at Saranack Lake, NY! While some people can grow tomatoes still. Its facinating.

Some day my love of gardening is going to drive me further south, at least zone 8!

They taste pretty good. Maybe a little mushy. We had temps of close to 30 even in FL recently. That may have effected the taste?

Lately, I've been looking at a lot of tomatoes in the seed catalogs. But, the pictures all seem staged.

It is good to think about what can be growing in my garden. Your photo's, Hardland, make it all more real.

Also, you deserve the compliments on those cages!
