Monstrous tomatoes

Ok, here's the situation: I just started growing tomatoes for the first time, this year. I planted the plant in the middle of May and it was just a baby, but it's had plenty of time to grow in the California sunshine and it's HUGE. No one would believe it if I told them how big it was, you'd have to see it. But anyway, a tomato cage went out the window a long time ago so I bought a trelice(sp?) type thing and tied some of the vines? to it. Well now the poor trelice, which is about 5 feet tall mind you is ready to fall over from the weight and the tomatoes have COMPLETELY taken over my little suburban garden and I need to prune them! Unfortunately I have no idea how to do this without putting the plant into shock or jeopordizing my millions of still green tomatoes.....HELP!
