Tough Skin

Given that some varities naturally have tougher skin than others is there anything that could make skins tougher than they would normally be?

I think the ones exposed more to the elements, sun and wind primarily would develop tougher skin.

I have noticed with the considerable heat and the lack of water, that my tomatos' skins are toughening up a bit. And I think the flavors are getting more intense, too.
