Birds

Hi! Do birds eat tomatoes? I have been growing toms for 20 plus years and can't figure out what is eating my ripe fruits. I don't see any borrow holes so it is not a ground hog. Thanks

Birds often peck holes in ripe tomatoes to get the water. There are home remedies like hanging red Christmas tree ornaments on the plants to fool the birds, but draping bird netting over the plants or picking at the pink stage is probably more effective.

Some people say that providing water with a bird bath helps, but I wouldn't be surprised if some birds didn't get a taste for tomatoes...maybe some food value from the seeds.

Field mice will also climb up the vines and eat ragged holes in fruit, so mouse traps might help.
