Does any one know what causes tomatoes to split on the bottom of them?

Are they split, or is it blossom end rot, where the bottom never developed at all and it looks like the fruit just cut off in the middle?
Splitting is caused by uneven water conditions.
Blossom end rot is a lack of calcium.
