Keep squirrels out of my tomatoes

I think squirrels are eating my tomatoes before they can ripen. The tomatoes are knocked of the vine on the ground partially eaten. Anyone have any suggestions besides target practice. I live in a populated rural area of S.E. Texas and my town isn't real fond of gunfire,lol. I read about the cloth for birds; wonder if that would work for squirrels?

I have two suggestions,

the first is to cover your tomatoe plants with some netting and the second is to sprinkle some ground peppercorns around the plants and perhaps on the plants.

Both methods combined together would probably work best.
