Tomato Cloning Experiment...

I am trying to clone my Big Beef tomato plants. I'v done this earlier in the season with soil,this time I'm trying the water method. I'm gonna take pics as the roots develope.

These were started 2 days ago. I took 5 cuttings from my Big Beef tomato plants, scaffed them with a knife where the roots will eventually start growing out of, then I use PH adjusted water and put the cutting into cups. I then took a plastic bag and put that over the cups to keep the humidity in.

Evenutally I'm gonna grow these this winter under a 1000 watt switchable ballasts, MH/HPS light.

This is interesting , ive never thought to clone a plant , is it quicker than growing by seed ?
The water you mention is adjusted ..can you give specifics please ?

Tomato plants are pretty easy to clone and it is not a bad way to start plants for the late season. They will root very easily in water as shown in the photos or you can just stick the cuttings in soil in a container that is place in the semi shade and is kept constantly moist until roots appear. Make sure that your cutting appears to be disease free and cut it of just below a leaf node, as root will start easiest and first at a leave node area.

The clones are still doin ok. They have not yet rooted but are still coming along. They are all real green and full energy ready to let them roots out.

Today I changed the water since I first tried this. I actually forgot about them puttig them in the windowsill, in the window that gets the least amount of light. I was cleaning earlier and found them, I'm like O YEAH! haha.

It looks like you may have been trying to clone from lateral leaves. If so, that will not likely work. To clone, cut or pinch a sucker and place that in water and place in indirect light. It should root in about two weeks.

A trick I've used is
cut a finger off a disposable glove about 1-1/2"
put a tomato sucker in it & fill it with water.
carefully plant (I use regular potting soil) the sucker in a small pot about 3 to 4" deep keeping the water, in the glove finger, full.
Keep it out of direct sun for about a week.
The water lasts long enough for the plant to generate new roots.
When you go to re-pot in about 2 weeks, pull the glove finger off from the bottom.
I've also had success just sticking the sucker in damp soil & daily spraying the leaves with water. Just keep it in the shade till it starts to grow.

This is a old thread of mine I did 2 seasons ago and yes 2 out of I think 6 did root and went on. But it took them almost a month. I had to keep changing water because it would keep getting very cloudy and mucky.
