tomato plants

My tomato plants have grown to over 4 feet tall. There are lots of flowers but not many tomatos. I try to keep them to one main stalk, but there are many branches growing from that main stalk. Is it wise to prune back some of these branches or should they be left to grow? Should I lop off the tops of the plants which are taller than the 4 ft. stakes I am using or shouldn't you cut the tops of tomato plants?
Are there "sucker" branches on a tomato plant? If so how do I know which ones are the "suckers"? thanks for your help
