Loofah Seeds to Share

I have some loofah seeds that I can share. Someone at work knew that I was gardening so they brought me in a whole dried loofah and it was FULL of seeds. I'm starting some this weekend indoors on a heating pad, then hopefully they will line my fence :)

My neighbour grows loofah / luffah very successfully.

He tied some old rope to criss-cross from one side of the fence to the other side to create a canopy-like effect. So the loofah climbed up the fence and is now growing across the ropes. The fruit then hang down in the air-space created, rather than against the actual fence, which may sometimes damage the fruit. Angled loofah wouldn't be so much of a problem, but the smooth variety is less tough. We actually made our own loofah scrubber from one of his fruits :)

Good luck!

I got 3 seeds in trade earlier this year. Fingers crossed for a successful plant so that I'll have many more seeds next year! I'm gonna baby the crud outta these things to make sure I get one fruit out of it!

Jeff, let me know if you need more seed. I have plenty.

Trop, I wish I had an arbor or pergola that they could grow on. The fence is my only option for my space. Maybe next year:-)

I would love to have some loofah, what would you like in exchange?

P.S. - I have several herbal seeds, so if you need anything in that area I would be happy to trade you ;)

Hey Barefoot, send me a message with your mailing address and I'll get them out to you. I'm all out of growing room for now so I don't need anything, maybe next growing season:-)

Hey Barefoot, I got your message and will be mailing them out this weekend. I started mine in regular potting soil 2 seeds each in 3 inch peat pots inside the house. I kept them moist and after about 3 days they started popping up. Then I moved them outside, still in the peat pots, and they're growing well. They are sitting in a glass baking dish, and I keep about 1/2 inch of water in the bottom. I bring them in at night because I have got a rogue raccoon that has been wreaking havok in my yard the last week or so. :x

ok, I may have to try it that way...last year I planted them in my small herb garden (this is the garden I do my annuals in) and it took over the whole thing. Put pots sound good too. Racoons are cute until they come to do the devils work on your garden :x LOL

Good luck with your luffa. You both have longer growing seasons so you won't have the problem I had last year, which was that they just started to flower whne the frost came and killed them all. I posted photos of the way the two plants were getting ready to swallow the garage in this thread.

This year, I started the seeds extra early with the result that now, they are trying to vine (first tendrils are out) but they can't be planted outside until next month!

If these guys fail this year, can I contact you for some seeds since these two are my last seeds....
