What should I plant in my rock retaining wall?

This is a great forum with a lot of valuable information.

I live about thirty minutes north of Anchorage, Alaska. My house is situated on the side of a hill, well more of a mountain, surrounded by devils club, ferns, cottonwood trees, birch trees, and spruce trees. I installed a large rock retaining wall to help with drainage and give me more of a yard; it is about 4' high and about 100' long. Since there are gaps in the wall, I thought I would put some plants in the holes to help soften the wall. I have transplanted some ferns and moss but would like to add "something" else to give it more color and diversity. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Probably evergreens because I don't know of any perennials that could survive. Check out cooperative extensen or a university in AK for ideas.
