Prepping area for turf - Beginner!

Hi,

I recently spent some time clearing out my back garden after purchasing a new home. I'm pretty useless when it comes to outdoors and I'm really struggling with this one.

My back garden was completely overgrown, so I cleared all of that and then worked my way around cutting hedges and establishing some sort of level ground in the garden as our primary goal was to turf the area for space for our daughter.

I've since hit a bit of a block...

The ground seems to be vastly soil, but there is definitely some small stones in areas and it's not very deep soil in a lot of the areas I've tried to level out.

I'm now unsure as to whether I should buy topsoil, to create a solid layer of decent soil to lay the turf on, or whether this would be a waste of time and money with the soil underneath being not so great quality.

I've attached some pictures if it helps, but I guess I just need guidance with where to even think about going next in terms of working towards the turf being laid.

Any help, advice and pointers appreciated!

Dan
