I had our water company install a water only meter and the plumber installed the spigot

It only sits 6-8 inches above the ground. He told me that I could have had a box below the ground but it would have required me to get down on my hands and knees

We are both the same age and he said it would be much easier on top. Now I need something to protect it that is low maintenance and looks ok

You could build a landscape feature but it probably wouldn’t be low maintenance.

Actually, I think a landscape feature would be a good idea. I would build a big box with a door of some kind to access the spigot or a post. Having tripped over many low lying objects that I know are there, about 3 ft tall will be good. I have a water valve in the front yard that needs to be cleaned out once in a while because the dirt will get in there when it rains and I need to keep it accessible. I put a valve cover that looks like a fake rock over it and pretty much worked the landcaping around the rock and other rocks so it would not stick out like a sore thumb. Previously I had a sprinkler head that the neighbors kids and yardman broke 4 times because they used the corner of the yard as a pathway instead of the driveway and the kids ran into the sprinkler with their bike. I did have a concrete tile over the riser and they broke the concrete block as well as the riser. I even put a flex riser on it and they still broke the top. I had to find a bigger object that was harder to miss.

tripping is definately a big concern
I have a pipe in the ground for my fence rod that sticks up a little above the ground and I have tripped on that thing a million times even though I know it’s there
I saw someone trip and fall on her face once and she broke her nose real bad
I like the box idea and the rock idea both
here we have to protect hose bibbs from freezing in the winter
I had a hose bib freeze and break once and it was not fun

Today I was thinking that building a small cage around the spigot might work.

How fancy do you want it? It seems like it would be easiest to just set up landscaping timbers in a rectangle or square surrounding and marking off the space— stacking at least 2. then set something over the spigot like a plastic milk crate or baker’s bread crate (if you want it to be big enough to also cover the other stuff?) and then the utilities can be edging-bordered and the space can be mulched and/or planted.

If you want to get fancy, there are actually fake boulders that you can buy to slip over things you want to hide.

As it is though, my first thought was that left as it is, any dog on walk would want to mark it, and I wouldn’t want to touch it without washing it first. So my design would keep them away from the spigot and surrounding area…..

I actually would raise the spigot as well unless you are going to use it to attach something like a timer, but even that should be higher than the emitters or the back flow preventer will clog over time and won't protect the water supply. Dogs will mark anything even plants and trees so that is hard to stop. I was thinking of a lamp post, but only one might still look odd.

There's quite a few ways to tackle this.
You could build a small fake well.
Put one of those wooden windmills over it
A half pot on its side with flowers.
Simple Post.
Post topped with an led light.
Etc... I'm on my phone so I hope these show up.
