Backfill material for excavation?

Hi,
I have excavated some of my heavy clay for the purpose of making a path and patio. However, due to some circumstances I want to re-do and have the excavation covered up and back to the way it was. Can I just put back the soil I excavated? Problem is it came out in very large chunks so I would have to crush each and every one of them and some have roots from weeds embedded inside. Or could I use a paver base material to fill the excavation?
