building a dry / wet japanese creek bed

we are landscaping our yard in the Japanese theme. I have been searching for information on dry / wet creekbed. The flow of our yard allows us to make a natural looking creekbed. What I am trying to find is information on construction matreials needed like pumps, landscape liner etc. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Is it to be a dry or wet creek? Dry streambeds were introduced by Muso Soseki in the 1200's so you wouldn't be off theme (or blazing any new ground) by skipping the pumps and liner and just doing dry. But if you insist on the sound of running water...

We are designing the creek bed where it will be dry most of the time but where we can create the flow of water as we desire, such as when entertaining or simply want the relaxing sound of water. This is a project I am really doing a great deal of research on because we want no mistakes or suprises when we are finished. I do appreciate the advice. Thank you!
