Plants like Lily of the nile (Agapanthus)

I am starting a landscape for my front yard from nothing. I have the beds all set and am ready to plant. I have a pretty good idea what I want but am stuck on one spot. I like the green cover of the lily of the nile and was going to plant that in two areas. But after looking around I found that everyone seems to have them in there yard. Is there any other flowering type plants I could use in there spot. I would like to have white or lighter color flowers on it when it blooms. I live in South Louisiana (zone 8-9) and have very rich soil. But also needs to be easy to care for as I am just starting out. Also it is the south side so full sun. Thanks for any help you can give, Canoe

Look for some evergreen hemerocallis, or daylilies. They will come in many colors of flowers, and many heights of flowers and of leaves, but they will have the strappy look of agapanthus. You won't find a good assortment at big box stores, though.

After looking into some of the Daylilies (hemerocallis) none that I can find state that they are ever green. They do say cut back old folage in late fall. Being in the southern zone will they stay green through the year? :D But to tell you the truth. I showed some pics to my wife and she loves the blooms. so thanks for the tip.

There surely are evergreen varieties. Stella D'Oro would be one, although that's not the most notable feature of this favorite hem. Stella is everblooming in the summer. Down here, it is sometimes used as extensive ground cover. Long days of hard freezes would probably set it back though.

This site has some that are evergreen in Minnesota! so I think you can expect a respectable evergreen cover in your area.

When looking for details on plants, use the genus name in your searches. You'll get some dealers and some forum links, but a lot more technical yet still user friendy links like UMN's above.

I don't know that hems are your best bet, but it's the one plant that comes to my mind and my preferences. Huge variety in them. Stella D'Oro is probably still the biggest seller though. Should be available in your area. If you can locate a local hem nursery, a visit would be worth your while. They'll be able to advise you better. Understand that some hem cultivars are big bucks, so don't get attached to any one flower until you find out what it will cost you. Hemerocallis nurseries cater to the collectors.
