Anyone have experience using Surround (tm) insect barrier?

I was reminded about my bag of Surround(tm) kaolin clay which, as I understand it, is supposed to be mixed with water as spray or a dip and used as insect barrier.

I dabbled with trying it a couple of times but have not experimented extensively and would like to start next growing season.

The product has been mentioned here and there in various threads, but it looks like it has not received focused attention.... But it does sound like some members here *have* been using it for a while. How do you use it? On what crops? What pests have you found using this to be particularly effective for? Any drawbacks?

...I admit to going overboard when I tried it. It seemed like it was truly harmless, so I used a hose end tree and shrub sprayer and tried to spray my plum and apple trees with it. I mixed it with milk solution, hoping for combined fungal disease prevention. ...and I had to stop midway because I realized the tree-height spray (which worked very well using the sprayer as recommended by members here) was be-spattering whatever was on the neighbor's side of the fence!

When the dripping skim milk-like liquid dried, it looked as if I had WHITEWASHED EVERYTHING!

Whether the milk had helped to make it stick or not, I don't know (I was reminded of casein-based Milk Paint... :? ) but it was difficult to near impossible wash off of unintended things and crops that got sprayed in the process, requiring serious scrubbing. That was the bad news -- good news was that the coating lasted for a good while on the apple and plum tree foliage and branches. It may or may not have helped to extend the effects of the milk spray. I couldn't draw a definitive conclusion.

So... That was my LIMITED experience. I think I tried at least one more time on the fruit trees and maybe some of the veggies, but I didn't experiment extensively. I'd like to learn more and try again next year. So please share your experiences. :D

Applestar, When I was little, I put a ring of salt around snails, does that count?
