Artichokes in Ground (AZ) Lost Leaves. Potted are Thriving?

My artichoke plants planted in the ground in arizona don't seem to be growing much. My daughter planted hers in a pot and it has doubled in size. My first few leaves turned yellow and fell off . Any thoughts

Did you use the same soil for both chokes? My immediate thought was it might be some sort of soil pathogen or a pest munching the roots. We have lots of both out here... :x Are they on the same watering cycle? If so you might be over-watering the chokes in the ground. I know the soil looks really dry on the top (and it is) but it is very dense and may actually be holding quite a bit of water just a few inches down. Could be root rot. The pots are probably pretty much dry by the end of the day by now and require much more frequent watering, especially if they're terra cotta.
