Garlic and potatoes

Hi everyone...just a question about starting garlic and potatoes in my home garden in Zone 5.Can I just break off a small part of a regular clove of garlic and plant it? When is the best time as I hear some people plant it n the fall? How deep?

How about potatoes, can I just let some "eyes" form and then plant a small piece that contains one? Do I plant them in the gulley and then mound or start in a mound right away? Thanks Linda

I get seed potatoes from the local feed store, cut them into pieces with three eyes (this is called "chitting" but don't ask me why)
No, Chitting is pre-sprouting.

A method of preparing potatoes or other tubers for planting. The seed potatoes are placed in a tray in a light and cool place and given a little water. All but three or four of the "eyes" (sprouting parts) of the potato are removed, leaving the strongest growths only. After the sprouts are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) long, the seed potatoes are planted in the ground.
