Mulching the garden today!

I have been using wheat straw for mulch this year and have always thought it was a little too coarse to keep the weeds at bay. After seeing a discussion on grinding up leaves for compost I thought I'd try using the weedeater to grind up the straw to make a finer mulch. It works great! :D

I broke the bale down into flakes and placed one flake at a time in a large tub. Inserted the head of the weed eater and ran it full blast, moving it around the tub to get the straw broke down. Wow, what a difference it made. Kind of messy, but I put the tub in the empty bay of my compost bin and the overspray will make a nice starting layer the next time I turn the bins.

you can also use a walkbehind mower with a grass catcher. Lay the straw out and mow over. Carry the bag to the garden beds. :D

That would work pretty well too, I just don't have a push mower right now!

What a brilliant way to cut in into smaller bits.
