How much topsoil should I have? What depth?

What depth of topsoil is necessary? What depth is too little? Thanks.

Eight inches of loosened enriched with compost soil, will let you grow you most crops on top of your soil. Root crops like carrot or parsnip need deeper worked (and maybe sifted) soil.
