how to ash things to make fertilizer

If you read the sticky above this post there r npk values ash things like grape fruit lemon lime and cucumber skins have high npk values . how do I ash these things. Make a small fire and throw them in can I do if over my stove.

I don't understand. Say a little more. Why do you want to ash them? I think most of us would just throw them in the compost pile. I think opabina's posts where it says ash, that's the science way of measuring. I don't think that means that's what you should do....
