I was wondering what would be a good plant to start with? I have virtually no experience in gardening but I know I want to try it out! Any help would be really appreciated

Love to help you out, Trouble, but the question is too vague. Are you talking about something in a container? Do you have a good sized container, like 5 gallon bucket sized? Do you have a space for it to be in the sun all day or what kind of sun exposure will it have? What general kind of thing are you interested in growing, fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers?

Give us a bit more info and we will try to make some good suggestions...

A container like a flower pot
Our neighbors grow herbs and some fruits in flower pots, and we thought it was a neat idea. Of course, in the future we're going to have to place them in the ground, but that's not an issue. We have a space for it to be in the sun all day, and I'm interested in growing fruits/vegetables/herbs.
Since this'll be my first time actually gardening, I was wondering if you could give me some ideas on what plant(s) I should begin with. Some that won't take an exaggerated amount of work everyday.

Sounds like you've got a great resource! Go talk to your neighbors and see what they are growing in their pots. That would be the best way to find what works well in your climate. You are in So. Calif and I'm in Ohio, so real different gardening worlds. And So Cal encompasses a big range of climates from cool coastal to desert. ..

But full sun in SC sounds like a great place for growing herbs. Try oregano, sage, chives, thyme, mints, lavender, basil, lemon balm, anise hyssop, bee balm (gorgeous flowers that hummingbirds like and makes a nice tea - but it gets tall, you would need a good sized container)

For veggies, green peppers and hot peppers are pretty easy to grow in containers , make nice looking plants.

My neighbors are growing red peppers, cilantro, and I think basil. I'll have to ask or go over again
We have limes, lemons, and an Asian fruit (I'll need help IDing it) in the backyard. The lemons are high in a tree and the limes are in a bush that's about 5 feet tall. The lemons and the other fruit are trees that are right next to each other. They're both fruiting, and so is the lime bush! They were here when we moved here about 7 years ago, so I haven't actually considered them as MY plants

Edit: A quick ID says that they're Persimmons!
