What Causes Green Onions to Die?

My grandmother moved into a new house and has noticed some... what look to be green onions. They are growing underneath some trees along with some quack grass she thought she would weed it out to make it easier to pick her onions but when she removed the quack grass the onions started to die anyone know whats causing this are they not geen onions? They have the small white bulb with roots and the hollow green part on top

Hi ashley, I have a couple of maybes. Maybe growing under the trees in with the grass the didn't get enough light. Maybe when she removed the grass they got suddenly more/too much light.

Maybe you should plant some onion sets in a good location, you'll get some greens for sure.

If you post a picture or two people will have more to go on and give some information and suggestions. Have a good day.

It is likely they came up from some seed and have just ran their course. You say they made small bulbs? That is exactly what you would expect from a seed in its first year. If you wanted green onions, they should have been pulled while the tops were still standing and nice looking.
