Slug pubs: how long/often do I need to fill them?

I am trying to avoid a chemical solution to my slug issue; my wife thinks the beer solution is a bit pricey, even with Pabst and King Cobra!

Anyone else using slug pubs and can I cut the beer with water some? Will they still be effective?

I don't know anything about "Slug Pubs." I've always just put out old foil pie pans full of beer. Here's an old thread about slugs that has some suggestions on things to use instead of beer. You might find what you need there.
