Red Ants???

What could be a red ant in Massachusetts? It was about the size of a small carpenter ant sitting on the outside handle of my patio door. Did not get that good a look as hubby smashed it - really smashed it.

Any ideas - I couldn't take another species, carpenter ants, pavement ants, I think Pharoah ants --- isn't that enough to try to get rid of.

Please let me know if it could be a fire ant and what to do. Thanks much.

I think you are a bit too far north for a fire ant. They are pretty small compared to most other ants. Either way, you would know if it is : they make mounds in your yard about a foot wide, and sometimes as tall. Very noticable.
