Destructive Tree Roots

Hi everyone,

Nice forum.

My mother in law is about to have her tree chopped down because she is afraid that the roots are getting so long that the roots may push through her basement wall.

Is there a way to keep this from happening without chopping down the whole tree?

If we do some major prunning of the branches, will that discourage the roots from growing much longer?

Before she does that, what indications are there that this is happening? (I have NEVER heard of such a thing in a cement foundationand even in stone foundations it's very rare; roots, like water, follow the path of least resistance...

In most trees roots will only go about as far as the drip line, so check the top and you'll have a good idea of what the bottom is doing. But get more info before you whack down a tree that is shading your family and keeping the soil in you yard; you will likely end up with more trouble removing it than keeping it... :(
