Can I mulch with this?
There are some lovely old yucky straw bales sitting out in the garden - not sure how old, maybe a year or so? - that I intended to mulch with. I gently peeked inside one today to see how it loos inside and a bunch of white mushrooms are growing all over the inside. Can I mulch with this around my veggies, or will the mushrooms cause problems? Can I compost the mushrooms and use the straw as mulch? Or is the whole thing better left alone? Thanks!
The fungus on your straw will not affect vegetables. As you spread out the straw the mushrooms will disappear. I use straw as mulch after first putting down a couple layers of newspaper as weed suppression. At the end of the year it all gets tilled into the soil to add to the organic material in the garden. Straw is excellent mulch no matter how yucky.
