Tipping over.

Hello everyone!

I hope this is the right place to post this question.

For years now, all my flowers keep tipping over. I have tried staking them, giving them support, piling on compost, and cutting them low. But, they just keep falling over!

It's starting to drive me crazy! Is there something I'm doing wrong? Here are some pictures.

Some plants just do that. Quite often it happens when they are not in enough sun -- rudbeckia for example is basically middle of a prairie kind of plant. They are supported by grasses and other plants around them.

In your photos, plants growing by a solid wall will be spindly while trying to grow out away from the wall to where there is more light/sun and then fall over.

But even if you plant them with plenty of sun, some plants ar just floppy. Sometimes you can find special cultivars of the same plant that have been selected and bred to be more stocky and dwarf growing.

One way to manage them though is to secure a wire fencing horizontally at two levels and let them grow up through the openings. You can get similar though not as secure/effective results with criss crossed strings. You can also use those inexpensive accordion-folded wire border fencing.

I like the idea of a horizontal wire fence. I think I'm going to start planning to build one for next year. I was thinking about doing something like that for my raspberries, they like to fall over too.
