Fitting log board edging?

I want to fit some domed picket log board edging around the flower beds at the front of my house.
They come in fixed lengths of one metre and have to longer spikes either end which hammer into the ground.
I need to fit a front length run of 2.5 metres.
Does anyone have any experience on how easy it is to shorten them and join them together to get the exact lengths you need?

This is the type of thing I mean:

They look like they are not designed to be shortened. You could make something like it from scratch. That's what I would do. I think the end pieces that go into the ground should be longer for better holding power.
