rice!

Fri Jun 13, 2014 6:31 am

Earlier, in the seed starting discussions, I mentioned that the rice hulls I was using in my home made eco friendly potting soil, was actually sprouting a few rice plants.

I managed to save just a few of them and put them in a container, where they are doing a decent imitation of ornamental grass.

Since the picture was taken, it has gotten bigger and now the first stalks are starting to make seed heads!

I know if I get any rice at all, it will be a small handful; it is just fun, because I've never seen rice plants before.

They are growing in a regular pot, in my potting soil, just with a saucer under it, that I do let water sit in, to keep it moist.

My friend used to grow rice in a bucket.it was kept flooded all the time with about 2 inches of water. the bucket had no holes in it. We just topped it off everyday to keep mosquitoes down.
Happy gardening in Hawaii. Gardens are where people grow.

How fun! You would have enough to plant a whole crop next year (or just transplant the volunteers again

I am way late with my sticky/sweet rice seedlings -- not even planted out yet though they are hardening off now -- so I have serious doubts that they will mature in time to harvest. But I'll probably plant the rice paddy area in the coming week. I'm planning to plant some of my tropicals -- bananas, pineapples, etc. -- in the ground around it this year, along with yacon. This should work out since I'll have to dig up everything in the fall, which will give me a chance to renovate the area.
Learning never ends because we can share what we've learned. And in sharing our collective experiences, we gain deeper understanding of what we learned.
