My forced bulbs are molding

This has happened every time I try to force bulbs and I'm getting really discouraged. The water is only just up to the roots, there is air around the bulb itself and they're sitting in a window so they get lots of light. The roots are expanding and the growth is green at the top.

So why the mold?

I can post pics if that helps. One of them, the white one, has a lot of what looks like black goo at the top- do I have dud bulbs?? :(

Any help is always appreciated!

Thanks!!

Yes photos would be helpful. Also, what kind of bulbs are they? Some are better suited to water culture.

These were from a bulb grab bag at the Boston Flower Show so I don't know what they are.
