What is this weed and how can I get rid of it?

Three years ago I turfed my lawn and was able to look after it really well for two years. Unfortunately last year circumstances meant that I could not look after it as well as I had and on inspection this year I note that a weed I had previously been able to keep at bay has taken a grip on my lawn.

I attach a photo of it and would welcome any help on getting rid of it.

I have concrete kick-boards at each side of my lawn and it has grown all along these edges. It has also sprouted randomly in two or three places in within the lawn. I would prefer to be able to treat it without any detrimental effect to my lawn

Any help and advice would be really welcome

Thanks

Hi schmunkee :D

Your weed is Potentilla reptans commonly known as creeping cinquefoil.

As for getting rid of it organically you need the soil to be moist and a lot of patience. It is similiar in habit to a wild strawberry and sends out runners that then root. If you can pull gently following the runners they should come out. Also as soon as you see any runners coming of the main plant pull them off to stop them rooting.

Franco you must not have enough work to do. Get back out there and do some more digging!
