Pruning Passion Flower

Last year, planted passion flower vines which did very well [Seattle, WA]. However, we had a couple of severe winter storms which did a number on the plants. I think we lost a couple of them. About a month ago, I severely pruned the rest back to about 1-2 feet above ground [cut back to what I think was live vine]. Did I do the wrong thing. I am originally from Texas where they die back in winter and come back each year. Will they come back, or do I need to purchase new ones to plant. Thank you for any replies.
