Advice on some ANTI/dog tactics!

Hello everyone, I wonder if anyone has discovered any substance that when sprinkled around the edge of my island beds will stop the male dogs from coming in and marking their territory! I have an old female dog myself. I dnt know if it actually harms the lavender, thyme and rock roses but I cringe everytime I see it happen.
Best wishes

Annette.

I don't know of anything other than a fence to keep a male dog from spraying on what you don't want him to. Either that, or stand out there with a good heavy duty water gun and squirt them every time they walk into your yard.

I know that in many countries dogs are allowed to roam free. Many countries have problems with feral dogs and cats as well. If your female is intact that will attract males. If not, if the males are intact then they will mark. Even neutered males do this. Here's some ideas that won't harm the dogs, the garden or the environment to deal with roaming dogs.

I have a small yard and a doggie dog so the dogs can go in and out when they need to. I have 3 females and one male. They are all spayed and neutered, but still like to mark on top of the last dog who did their 'business'. The male loves to sprinkle my plants as well. In a small garden it's a problem. I planted liriope in front of shrubs and plants so he can potty on that. In the spring, when it starts looking burnt, I cut it to the ground and it grows again. It's an evergreen clump forming plant and comes in an all green version as well as several variegated ones.

There is also a motioon activated sprinkler called a scarecrow. They are expensive but consider the money saved on burned plants from the dogs. From what I've read you don't have to put the 'beak' on it so it doesn't look so comical. Many companies sell them but in Spain you may need to mail order it. It's the same idea as Grey mentioned but you don't have to be in the yard armed with a hose.

I forget the name of it but, there is a sprinkler that you can buy that has a laser beam and if the dog (or any other animal) passes the beam, they get a jet of water in the face. Seems to work well.

Little fences that you can buy at nurseries (white and other colours) seem to work for my fathers dog. (though, I don't really believe that they work because she is a springer spaniel and the fences are only a few feet high.)

Anyway, the work according to my father.

It's the scarecrow for which I gave a link. :)

Thanks for the suggestions and I am very glad to hear that there ARE answers to this problem! Since then I have bought a spray bottle from the drug store especially to deter our furry friends so I am optomistic. Thanks. Annette. :)
