Pinetree gets its catalog out early! My seed catalogs don't usually come until around Christmas or even early Jan. I always figured it was to avoid being lost in the flood of Christmas shopping catalogs pouring in. I used to shop out of the catalogs, so I get a million of them. Now that I make most of my gifts, I should work harder at trying to stop the catalogs... such a waste of paper and beautiful printing.

interesting idea... I do of course recycle everything, but that's still a lot more wasteful than just not printing them.

I will have to think more about the gift wrap idea, see if there's a way I could do that, that would meet my rather exacting standards about gift wrapping...

You may just have gotten me started on a whole new hobby (as if I needed one!) I don't think I would like the look of packages just wrapped in pages from catalogs, but I realized if you get into making homemade paper, you could recycle the catalog pages into new homemade paper! Too cool!

So now I'm trying to figure out how to make a mold and deckle big enough to make a gift wrapping sized sheet! Can I do this in time for this Christmas?!

window screen.

When I experimented with making paper with my kids, we used window screens and embroidery hoops.

I think actual window frame/screens are not secured well enough to support the wet pulp.

Easiest way I can think of would be to use an artists canvase frame kit ... Or make a double frame similar to embroidery hoops in the size you want.

I can see you embedding herbs and flower petals. Lavender! Sounds like a wonderful project

Some seeds catalogs (bakers Creek for example) make good seed holders as well.

As for me I would have rather stayed home and looked through the catalog that got to the show. But I would have been happy to have the company.

I've seen greeting card paper you can plant and it turns into flowers - why not pulp up the paper, embed it with seeds, and use it as gift tags that are plantable? (That's how I used the plantable paper, cut into gift tags)

I'm tempted to use Marie Curie for the third. She's from the same era as the Alberts and with two Nobel prizes, she could certainly hold her own in conversation with them. But it might shake things up and make it livelier to have someone more contemporary.

So perhaps Ursula K. LeGuin, my all time favorite author, a contemporary woman with an amazing scope of thought...

Other than family, I've been wondering who I'd like to see at the Thanksgiving table . . .

Calvin Lamborn, who developed the Sugarsnap Pea should be an appreciated choice. Those snap peas were about the most important garden addition in my lifetime, after he came up with them!

And, James Baggett, with his peas, beans and tomatoes - wow! I've even grown his Summertime lettuce.

Sitting down with Luther Burbank . . . Hey!! Besides the ingredients, I wonder if they'd help do the dishes!

There are seed companies that are entirely online. One is Solana Seed in Quebec. I have never ordered from Solana. The shipping fee for international orders has deterred me . . . so far.

I have also received a couple catalogs in the mail already. they are stuffed in the cabinet until after the holidays as the last thing I need is to get garden obsessed already. a friend and I already made plans to start paper machet pot in january. I'm going to experiment with vegetable and tomato tone in the bottom of the pot so the seedlings don't die like they did last year.

I'm staring at a Christmas tree with wrapped presents underneath and all I think about is next years garden!!! All Dale can say is "who cares where you put it the ground is frozen"

Living in paper pots caused s nitrogen deficiency *I think* That makes me think they need something extra to survive the paper pots.
No one else had decorations up or gifts wrapped? Hello only 19 days left! Well, til Christmas other holiday celebrations come sooner! And I didn't say I was done, I just get 80% of my shopping done on black Friday.

Is anyone else up to 5 seed catalogs? Its nuts! I'm over seed savers and Bakers creek I LOVE them.

My memory isn't the best but I believe most of them turned yellow shriveled up and just died......though I think the toms and peppers stopped growing for quite awhile before they pooped out. Most had a few true leaves before they bit the dust.
Perhaps one of our trusty mods can relocate this section of this thread to the seed starting forum seeing as I've noe dragged us way off topic.
