I'm running out of room. My garden needs to be bigger
When I bought all my seeds, I also bought seed potatoes. I was originally going to plant them, but I decided not too and instead to save them for next year.
Well, my green thumb apparently has other ideas. I was getting a giant pumpkin seed out of my bag of seeds to get it started, and there was a green sprout looking at me. It was coming from one of my seed potatoes- so I opened up the bag. All 8 of them have sprouted through multiple eyes.
Augh!
I don't want to let them go to waste, and I don't really have room in my garden boxes, so now I'm thinking of getting 5 gallon buckets, and growing 1 plant in each bucket. Will this give them enough room?
My poor roommate, I've already taken over a quarter of the backyard- and when the pumpkins and gourds start up (I have a different section designated for them, as a memorial to my guinea pig pumpkin where he's buried) he's going to loose half the lawn, too! It's a miracle he hasn't kicked me out yet. He just keeps saying "okay, go ahead. Okay, that's fine"
I haven't heard of growing potatoes in 5-gallon buckets, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. There have been previous discussions, though, about growing them in garbage cans -- new ones, preferably.

Thank you I already did a bit of internet searching around, and ended up getting 18 gallon bins, 2 potatoes in each bin. Going to give it a try and see what happens. The nice people at home depot even drilled some drainage holes in the bottom for me! It'll definitely be a learning experience.Kisal wrote:I haven't heard of growing potatoes in 5-gallon buckets, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work.
