Burn pile before tilling?

We're buying a house and have a very large (2.5 acres) yard and want to start a garden. In the process of cleaning up the landscape and trimming trees, not to mention trees that have fallen down already and old firewood, we've amassed a large amount of brush. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a big burn pile/brush fire on the area where we plan to till the soil for our garden. Isn't nitrogen from ashes supposed to be good for the soil? Also, it would save me from having a large burnt spot in the yard. Your insight is appreciated. TIA! :D

What about a chipper/shredder, and then using the chips either as mulch *or* as the basis for a compost pile?

We use a wood chipper. The older I get, the more it feels like the thing is trying to kill me. It is mandatory for hot composting which also seems to be trying to kill me.

Yes it will add to the soil, you can rent a chipper if you wish. If you do burn check for burn permits you may need one.
