Grass resistent to pets

I have 2 med-large dogs that love to run & play. They have destroyed sections of grass most often traveled. I have a large area where the the soil is now compacted and areas were grass is being worn down. I live in the pacific. help!

Dogs will be dogs.. so why not build a dog-friendly garden instead? There are some good tips from this Australian website, specifically:
