What is this insect and is it harmful?

I recently found several of these insect on a watermelon plant.
Can someone tell me what they are and if they are harmful to the plants?

That to me looks like the larval stage of a ladybird beetle (aka: ladybug). Though, I may be mistaken. Still I don't think it will be a problem.

Techinically speaking though, ladybird beetles are not bugs as bugs are a spefific order of the class insecta but, I digress.

I wouldn't get to excited. These guys eat all the nasties that live in your garden.

That's good to hear. I just checked and they are ladybug larvae.
