Did I Plant a Weed? O.o

Hey Every1! Tis' me again ;p So I saw a Monstera today and looked around it to see if perhaps there was a seed or something to bring home to plant... well I had no clue what I was looking for and as I was looking near the base of the plant I saw this little plant thing decided it had the possability of being a monstera seedling ( lol I know it looks nothing like a monstera but once again I had no clue what I was looking for ) It was by far the most interesting looking tiny plant near the monstera, So I decided to dig down to get as many roots as possible and took this plant home and planted it... problem is I'm not sure if its a seedling of a plant or if its a weed!! Anyway! I took photos of it and perhaps someone could tell me what it is :)

somebody? anybody? I need to figure out what it is so that I can care for it properly if it isn't a weed. Should I take more pictures or are those ok?

Obviously not a monstera, though I'd imagine you knew that by now.

I do not know what this is, but between the red stems and the habit of growth, someone will probably know eventually. Those leaves are so dense on that plant. I was hoping to see any flower, but couldn't really tell. I'm also not certain of the leaf arrangement, but it would not help me at this point.

If you can wait until it flowers, and then post that pic, along with a single stem showing the leaf arrangement and type, you'll have a better chance at ID.

I don't want to get preachy, but where did you find this? You say with a monstera and you were hoping to get a baby plant, right? If it belonged to someone you know, your attempt may have been acceptable.

Another reason that where you found it is important is that maybe what was growing around it seeded this tiny plant. If it was at a garden center, all bets are off: too many possibilities including weeds.

Last, only very large monstera will produce seed in the right circumstance. If you've ever seen one that big that flowered and fruited, you'll know what I mean. Mine had to grow up onto my roof before it flowered. And I've never seen them randomly reseed in the US. Won't say it never happens, but it would probably be in Zones 10-11.

To get a monstera "baby" you'll have to get a cutting from someone who will let you take one. Take one to three leaves on a stem, with the little white or brown root nubs showing at the node where the leaf comes out, and pot one node in a very fast draining soil mix, keep it well watered, every day if you must, maybe tent it with plastic or a cloche, and expect roots to start in a few days.

I was talking to the person inside the building I was coming out of and got onto the gardening subject... He said he had a landscaper come out to do the gardening and design of the place. He said If I wanted to I could take a look and see if there was anything that I could take seeds or cuttings from. He didn't know anything about the plants out there however. I even brought that plant in after picking it to see if he knew what it was before going home but he had no clue either. I did try comparing this little plant to the plants around it but still couldn't see anything that resembled it which is why I thought perhaps it was a random weed of some sort  I've also done tons of searching on google and can't seem to find anything that sounds or looks similar to it. OooOooo maybe I found a new species of plant!!! ( LOL jk jk!! ) :D Anyway If anyone has any idea be sure to clue me in :D Thanks!

Ps: Thankyou so much for the information on Monstera and for responding Thanrose :)

It seems to have some resemblance to Scarlet Pimpernel, but as thanrose mentioned, it's impossible to see the structure of the leaves, whether they are alternate or opposite, their vein pattern, or any of the myriad of other details that help when trying to ID a plant.

Whether or not you, personally, would consider Scarlet Pimpernel to be a weed is up to you, of course ... if that's even what the plant is. Most people do treat it as a weed, I think, but everyone has to decide for themselves. It might be like growing mouse-eared chickweed in a pot, which I have actually done. I had Zebra finches that just loved the stuff. I grew it in pots, so they'd have a bit over the winter. (I spoil my animals! )

 I spoil my animals too :D ..Well whatever this plant is... I'm growing it lol.... So far so good... It hasn't died yet from the transplant and it seems pretty healthy still even though I have no clue how to take care of it except for the basics... I've been giving it partial sun because When I found it, it was in a very shady area under a Jacaranda tree and pretty far under the Monstera plant I saw, so I can't imagine it was getting much sun. I Love Mystery Plants I just hate when I get the result cause its normal bad.. like an invasive species.. or in this case a weed lol! Anyway I'll keep searching and I'll go back to the place I found it to look around to see if there might be something else that looks similar.

So it's not that you actually wanted the Monstera? :D Because from what you said, it sounds like the owner wouldn't be averse to you taking a cutting. Since they grow those proto-roots along the leaf nodes, it's pretty simple to propagate them from cuttings.
... Though I wouldn't ignore thanroses description:
Mine had to grow up onto my roof before it flowered.
... Yep! they get BIG!

Oh no I wanted the monstera lol but I just didn't know much about it when I first saw it... I didn't even know what it was called. I just knew that it was pretty lol! I didn't try taking a cutting because I didn't know it would grow from cuttings so I was looking for a seed/seedling instead... but came home with this unknown plant instead

Alright so on my search to figure out what on earth this plant is... I came accross the one photo that I think looks close to the plant I have. Problem is that the website that this picture came from doesn't say what it is!! I can't seem to win for trying! Here is the picture of anyone know what it is? perhaps by knowing what this plant is it will help me to find out what the plant I have is.

Bewildered -- did you know your photos aren't showing up any more? Did you reorganize the pictures at Photobucket?

I just found out why Monstera's scientific name is Monstera deliciosa The fruit is actually edible AFTER ripening on the vine for 1 YEAR but is initially POISONOUS.
custard-like flesh inside, which tastes a bit like pineapple, with some banana and mango thrown in

Did you ever try eating yours, thanrose :?: 8)

Oh!!! I didn't notice that my photos weren't showing up!! Thank You so much for letting me know lol I put pics up all the time but didn't know if I reorganized my photobucket photos that it would mess them up on here -wall- Whelp I guess I've got some work to do to update all the photos I've posted lol

Oh and with a name like that you could just imagine how delicious they must actually be :D I have been eyeing a seedling on ebay instead of going the cutting process I find that it always worries me when I try to root a cutting in soil because so many of the ones I try rooting in soil fail... even with rooting hormone :( But before I go the ebay route I might take a look at some nearby nurseries instead :D

Hi Again Every1!!

So Considering nobody has been able to I.D. This plant and its been awhile I decided to provide updated photos of the plant. As you can see.. ( sorta ) lol... the plant has developed tiny green pods or something. They have the shape of a pumpkin but are green and tinier then the point of a pen. I took a bunch of pictures because I really can't seem to get any decent upclose ones, so figured I'd give you guys your pic of which you'd like to use to I.D. this plant. It is a fairly small plant not even the length of your finger hence my difficulty getting decent photos. Anyway G'luck I.Ding it!

Hmmm. It reminds me of the wierder little Euphorbias, but I can't quite place it. Bah. Now it's going to torment me until I can figure it out.

well Lorax you might be onto something there... with your suggestion I began searching Euphorbias and came across this https://www.iewf.org/weedid/Euphorbia_peplus.htm It is so similar and yet so different still compared to my pictures. This has been bugging me since I found it lol I will be so relieved once I find out exactly what it is ;p

Actually, Greeny, I think you might have nailed it down with E. peplus! The Euphorbs are notoriously variable, and your habit, stems, leaves, and fruit capsules all match.

So if this is correct then I have indeed planted a weed that can have some medicinal uses lol The milky latex sap is toxic, and used as a therapeutic agent for the removal of warts and sunspots on the skin. Recent work also suggests that it may also be effective in treating superficial basal cell carcinomas.Thankfully I don't need to worry about any of that yet... though I'm sure as I get older I'll eventually end up with one of those if not all of them lol

Alright so its a weed... now what? lol throw it away? Bonsai it..?.. ROFL! perhaps just let it grow until it dies? Ugh... remind me not to get attached to a weed next time lol

Well, weeds are in the eye of the beholder. :() I mentioned on another thread that I cherish some things in my garden that locals call terrible weeds and would pull up on sight (the Sobralia orchids.) However, I also grow dandilions on purpose!
