Planting daffodils in Spring?

Today I was in the store and came across bags of daffodil bulbs on sale -- they seem to be in good shape, nice and firm. I've searched around the web and can't seem to get a good answer as to whether or not I can plant them now (April) in NJ.

I know they're supposed to be planted in the fall so they can have that exposure to cold, and I surely don't expect them to bloom this year if I do plant them. My main question is will it hurt them to be put in NOW to bloom next year?

If it really isn't a good idea, how do I store them so they'll make it through until Fall? Thanks!

generally, the advice I've heard in such situations is to get them in the ground asap, they'll store better in the ground than anywhere else. you'll probably get some growth the first year, but you're right to not expect flowers.

Daffodils are pretty tough. I think they'll be fine, even planted now. :)

Thanks for the replies. I put them in today --- we'll see what happens!

At least I'll know where they are....I was afraid if I stuck them inside for the summer, I'd forget where I put them
